How to Teach Your Child Positive Thinking

Posted by Tiara Swinson on January 10, 2022

positive thinkingNo matter what is going on at home or in the world, it is important that your child can still think positively and channel that into their personal confidence. Positive thinking isn’t simply ignoring problems, but rather your child seeing those problems and feeling confident and optimistic about their ability to solve them.

You should not force your child to dismiss negative emotions, but you can help them deal with these emotions and move forward. Instead of having a blind optimism, it’s important to teach your child that even when things are going wrong, they are capable of fixing things and working through challenges. A small setback can negatively affect your child, but they should understand it is not the end of the world.

Here are some ways you can help your child develop a positive attitude:

  • Reassure them that they can express their feelings. Positive thinking isn’t about being happy all the time, and there will be things that make your child sad, angry, or discouraged in their life. Allow them to express these feelings fully and safely, then help guide them to focus on solutions instead of dwelling on the problem.
  • Encourage and motivate your child. If your child is having a hard time, it can be helpful to simply encourage them to look at the positive aspects of things. Praise them for their hard work and celebrate their successes. If they make mistakes, don’t scold or punish them for it; teach them how to work through those mistakes and help them regain their confidence.
  • Act as a role model. Your child notices much more than you think, so it’s important to practice a positive attitude yourself. Show them that remaining positive through challenges is possible and can be good.
  • Allow your child freedom. Structure and discipline are important, but it is also important for your child to freely explore the world and encounter problems as they go. Gaining independence is an important part of growing up, and will help them build positive confidence as they go along.
  • Encourage your child to talk about positive things. Without limiting your child’s expression of negative emotions, guide them to dwell more on positive things. Show them that positive thinking has more power than negative events. Encouraging them to focus on positive events and emphasizing on their importance will help them realize that a positive attitude can help them learn and grow without stress.
  • Enroll them in positive extracurricular activities. Whether your child is interested in group sports or exploring arts, engaging them in activities they like can be helpful in building their confidence. When they encounter natural problems in those activities, it gives them the opportunity to practice positive thinking throughout their day.

If your child is having a hard time keeping a positive attitude, it may help to enroll them in Genie Academy. At Genie Academy, they will not only develop their academic skills, they will also build confidence in a fun and engaging environment. They will have the opportunity to get kind and helpful feedback from the teachers as well as work with their peers in group classes.

Maintaining a positive attitude can be hard, especially for sensitive children, but it is an important part of their success later in life. Make sure to keep their chin up, and stay positive yourself!
