Starting from an early age all the way up until children reach college, and many times even longer for those who pursue further education, human beings are exposed to various teachers throughout their lives. It is undeniable that teachers play a magnanimous role in shaping the lives of their students. That being said it is important to realize how important a good teacher and student relationship is.
Teachers are many things. They are educators, role models, discipliners, and sympathizers but during these crucial points throughout a child’s life, the most important thing to remember is that teachers are their mentors. They are not only educating your children on various educational concepts but they’re also teaching children the basic needs and skillsets they need in their everyday lives. “Teachers have the unique opportunity to support student's academic and social development at all levels of schooling” (Baker et al., 2008; Bronfenbrenner, 1979; Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 1998; McCormick, Cappella, O’Connor, & McClowry, in press).
Children experience different types of development as they grow and these developments all overlap one another whether it is social, physical, or academic. A good teacher understands that all of these changes are occurring in her students and adapts to become a guide and mentor to help them function through these things. “Aligned with attachment theory (Ainsworth, 1982; Bowlby, 1969), positive teacher-student relationships enable students to feel safe and secure in their learning environments and provide scaffolding for important social and academic skills”(Baker et al., 2008; O’Connor, Dearing, & Collins, 2011; Silver, Measelle, Armstron, & Essex, 2005). A good teacher has an obligation to make sure her students feel safe at all times. This in turn allows children to build a relationship built on trust with their teachers and be more likely to open up, be more honest, and feel comfortable enough to ask their teachers for help.
So what characterizes a good teacher-student relationship? There are many things that are on this list but a few of those that top the list include, creating a classroom space that is positive, motivating, and allows creativity. Establishing a judgment-free zone is extremely important. This lets students know that no question is stupid, and the importance of asking questions, after all, we are all learning. A good teacher knows the importance of being kind patient and respectful towards her students and at the same time hold them accountable to reciprocate that back. A good teacher boosts the self-esteem of her students and makes them feel accepted. A good teacher is also someone that holds her ground at all times and uses positive reinforcement to promote good behavior yet also makes it a point to ensure that her students know that bad behavior is unacceptable.
Each and every one of our students at Genie Academy is special to us. They all are different and unique in their own ways. By establishing a set of guidelines and expectations I have from my students from day one, students feel an obligation to keep their part of the agreement as I keep mine. Teacher’s in Genie Academy create a judgment-free zone that encourages students to be curious and ask questions when they do not understand something. This ultimately results in an extremely positive atmosphere and relationship amongst teacher and student. If you are looking for a program that has your child’s best interest in mind where the teacher truly cares about making a difference in your child’s life, Genie Academy is the place to call at (732-651-2700).
