Habiba’s parents enrolled her in Genie Academy because they thought they could help her improve her grades. Instead they found that their daughter became a better thinker. Her grades improved almost magically. We spoke to them about their experience at Habiba’s graduation.
New way of thinking and operating her brain
It was great for them to watch her develop her math skills here. “We have seen her developing because her grades werent that good. Then its like magic and getting better.” said Rasha her mom. “Its not about the math, its the way of thinking and the way she operates her mind.”
They started to see improvements in her grades at school. “The math is like training for the brain. Just like you exercise your body.” As Habiba practiced more math problems with a visualized abacus, she had to use her imagination. It gave her significantly better problem solving skills that she can use both in school and in the real world. They started seeing her use her improved problem solving skills in school.
Her Parents' Experience
Her dad Amr is a professional architect, while the mom is an engineer. They both have very solid math backgrounds. So they wanted Habiba's math to be just as strong. “Using the abacus is like visualizing Math, making it easy to understand. Because you see it first in your brain somewhere” said Amr.
He thought that Genie Academy's method of teaching math is a very good one. “Its how it should be’” It's not just about writing equations on the white board and asking the students to solve it. The students get to physically touch the abacus and also visualize it in their head. Once the students understand the basics of the abacus, then they will be very well-prepared as they continue to do more advanced and higher level math.“I really enjoyed my time at Genie Academy because I got to learn how to use the abacus. Once I got a good grasp on how to use the abacus, I learned how to do mental math with it, and I really liked that because using my imagined abacus helped me figure out really hard problems that would have otherwise been difficult to solve on paper” said Habiba. “It was also nice to be ahead of everyone else in my grade” she added. She also remarked that she could solve those kinds of problems easily while most other students in her grade were really struggling with it. That was a real confidence booster. “Overall, our experience at Genie Academy has been very good. We're so glad that we enrolled Habiba in this program. It made us very happy to watch her go through the program over the years and then finally finish it” added Amr.
