She wants to be a Doctor!
Once upon a time, Anisah looked at math and shied away from it. Now, she can do math calculations in her head faster than her peers at school. Her aspiration to one day become a doctor speaks volumes about the effect Genie Academy can have on a student. Even her parents were impressed when they watched Anisah do math problems in her head.
It Wasn't Always So Easy
Before starting Genie Academy, Anisah hated math with a passion. That's one of the reasons we wanted her to be part of this program. We wanted her to feel more comfortable with math problems. After being in Genie Academy, it's different. Math still isn't her favorite subject in school, but she doesn't hate it any more. I think it's because she's able to do the calculations now. She's even the fastest one in her class now.
Progress Shows Quickly
We enrolled Anisah in the program when she was just starting the third grade. Anisah very quickly started to be able to use the abacus, completing calculations in her head while her fingers moved on an abacus she visualized in her head. I started asking her to do calculations at home, and she was easily able to visualize an abacus and complete the calculation. By the time she had her answer, I still hadn't finished the calculation yet. That was really surprising for me, to see how quickly her math capabilities grew. Overall, Genie Academy was an amazing experience for me as I watched how quickly Anisah's math skills grew.
It Helps With More Than Just Math
Genie Academy has definitely helped Anisah in school. Her confidence level has increased a lot. When the teacher asks the class to do some math calculations, Anisah is the first one to raise her hand in class. I'm an instructor in a different school, and I notice that the students who have good math skills have very high confidence levels, as I can tell with Anisah.
Future Goals and Aspirations
Currently, Anisah's favorite subject is science. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she said she wanted to be a doctor, much to her parents' delight. The medical field continues to demand a high level of mathematical knowledge, so in order to be a successful doctor, Anisah needs to have strong math skills, which she has already developed during her time at Genie Academy. Her dream to be a doctor means she must like math enough to want to do it over a long period of time; her initial burning hatred of math has transformed into a deep interest that will stay with her as she continues to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.
