A Few Years Ago He Couldn’t Even Hold a Pencil Properly, Now This Genie Academy Student is at the Top of His Class!

When he joined Genie Academy, Caleb couldn’t even hold a pencil properly and was struggling to speak. In a few short years he’s the top of his class and exceeding expectations in Math, English, Soccer, Science, Drama, and even Geography!  He is a confident and articulate 10 year-old who is definitely on the path to success. He’s a member of Edison School District’s Gifted & Talented program, Martin Luther King Elementary School’s prestigious Odyssey of the Mind team. 

But six years ago, before Caleb joined Genie Academy, the story was different. Caleb’s speech development was far behind his peers. He had to regularly attend speech therapy classes to keep up. Worried and hoping to spark more creativity in his brain, his mom enrolled him in Genie Academy. Now his mom says “Genie Academy helped him think in a different way – to think outside of the box by using the abacus, and solving problems… it has helped a lot… I didn’t expect it to be so good.”

Most notably, Mom is happiest that Caleb’s speech has improved so quickly through Reading Genie. He no longer attends speech therapy. She is also thrilled because Caleb “is more confident. He is more willing to try things: in his swim team he improved because he was more willing to try… and he was in the top ten in Geography Bee and Math Olympiad.”

Caleb says that using the abacus “helped me subtract and add faster. Most people use the traditional method, and I see it as a different way… because the abacus helped me with that.” And it was precisely his different approach to math that enabled him to score in the top percentile of the CogAT and STAR Math Exams, and earn a place in Edison's Gifted & Talented program for Math and Engineering.

This 'different' math visualization is key to the Genie Academy model, and it helps kids like Caleb who struggle with traditional learning methods find their own inner genius and shine.
