Primary Level ISEE

The Primary Level ISEE is for the youngest students applying to grades 2 through 4. It’s a gentle introduction to standardized testing.

Who is it for?
This level is for younger students getting ready to enter, from 2-4 grade.

What’s on the test?

  • Reading – Tests basic reading comprehension using short passages and picture-based questions.
  • Mathematics – Covers foundational math concepts such as addition, subtraction, and number sense.
  • Writing Sample – Students are asked to write a short response to a simple prompt or picture (not scored but sent to schools).
  • Auditory Comprehension – Only for Level 2. Students listen to a passage and answer related questions to assess listening and understanding.

How long is it?
The total test time ranges from 53 to 60 minutes, depending on the level and specific sections included.

What to Expect
The primary level ISEE is age-appropriate and student-friendly. It assesses basic literacy and math skills in a low-stress environment. There are breaks between sections, and the tone of the test is supportive and encouraging.

Lower Level ISEE

The Lower Level ISEE is for students applying to grades 5 and 6, typically taken while they’re in grades 4 or 5.

Who is it for?
Students currently in 4th or 5th grade who are applying to 5th or 6th grade at private or independent schools.

What’s on the test?

  • Verbal Reasoning – Tests vocabulary through synonyms and sentence completion.
  • Quantitative Reasoning – Focuses on logic and problem-solving using basic math concepts.
  • Reading Comprehension – Students read short passages and answer questions that check their understanding.
  • Math Achievement – More traditional math problems involving arithmetic, simple geometry, and word problems.

  • Quantitative Reasoning – Focuses on problem-solving and critical thinking, using algebraic reasoning, proportions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Reading Comprehension – Passages are longer and drawn from literature, science, history, and social studies, with questions that test inference, tone, main idea, and supporting detail.

  • Quantitative Reasoning – Focuses on algebra, exponents, word problems, probability, and geometry, testing a student’s ability to solve problems using logic and analysis.

  • Math Achievement – Includes multi-step algebraic equations, data analysis, geometry, and concepts typically taught through early high school.
  • Essay – Students are given a single essay prompt and must write a clear, organized response. Though not scored, the essay is sent to schools to assess writing ability and thought process.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) is designed for students applying to private or independent schools for grades 2–12. It helps schools evaluate academic readiness and is commonly required as part of the admissions process.

It depends on the school. Some accept both, while others prefer one over the other. If your target school accepts either, we can help you choose based on your child’s strengths, as the tests differ in format and question style.

Students receive scaled scores (760–940), percentile rankings, and stanines (1–9) for each section. Schools use these results to compare applicants across a wide range of grade levels and regions.

We typically recommend starting 3–6 months in advance, depending on your child’s current skill level and confidence. Starting early gives plenty of time to build strong test strategies and reduce test-day stress.
