Elementary Level SSAT

The Elementary Level SSAT is for younger students just starting their private school.

Who is it for?

  • 3rd Grade Test – for students applying to 4th grade
  • 4th Grade Test – for students applying to 5th grade

What’s on the test?

  • Quantitative (Math): Basic arithmetic, like addition, subtraction, and simple fractions.
  • Verbal: Early vocabulary and word relationships.
  • Reading: Short passages to check reading comprehension.
  • Writing Sample: Students are asked to write a short story based on a picture prompt (this part isn’t scored but is sent to schools).
  • Experimental Section: A mix of new questions that don’t count toward the final score.

The Middle Level SSAT is built for students who are ready to take their learning to the next step and are preparing to apply to grades 6 through 8.

  • Students currently in grades 5–7 who are applying to grades 6–8 at private or independent schools.

  • Quantitative (Math): Two math sections covering algebra basics, geometry, fractions, ratios, and percentages.
  • Verbal: Includes synonyms and analogies to test vocabulary and reasoning.
  • Reading: Passages from fiction, nonfiction, science, and history with multiple-choice comprehension questions.
  • Writing Sample: A choice between two prompts – creative or essay-style writing. (Not scored, but reviewed by schools.)
  • Experimental Section: A mix of new questions used for test development (not scored).

  • About 3 hours and 5 minutes, including short breaks.

What’s the difficulty level?

Upper Level SSAT

The Upper Level SSAT is for students aiming to attend competitive high schools, and it’s the most advanced version of the test.

  • Students currently in grades 8–11 who are applying to grades 9–12.
