One might wonder, what does a typical day in a Genie Academy class entails! Genie Academy is a unique supplemental program that is designed to help children excel in Math and English. Our math program is broken up into two classes, with a one-hour class designated for children that are 3 ½ to 5 ½ years of age, and a 2 hour class designated for children 6 to 12 years of age. Each student in our class follows a unique lesson plan to meet their needs, and at the end of each level they finish they are assessed on the material they have completed then they move on to the next level.
Math classes at Genie Academy begin with yoga. At the beginning of every class once students have set up their stuff they go to the back of the class to partake in yoga. Children that do yoga experience various benefits that include but are not limited to, neuromuscular-development, digestion, relaxing the body, clearing and calming the mind, promoting thinking and memory and balancing energy, just to name some of the positive effects. Following yoga students follow their unique lesson plans. Toddlers that are ages 3 ½ to 4 ½ have lesson plans that are centered on proper number writing, and simple addition and subtraction. Toddlers that are ages 4 ½ to 5 ½ learn simple addition and subtraction then progress to more complex problems. Addition and Subtraction is taught through the use of the abacus. As they progress throughout the books they then move on to learning simple mental addition and subtraction problems. Toddlers in this age group also work in common core and learn to work with various topics such as special perceptions, patterns, sequence, shapes, ordinal numbers, working with odd and even numbers, word problems, graphs, telling time and simple geometry.
Following this once students complete their designated classwork and the work has been checked, there are various class activities that take place. Class activities range from various math oriented games, number writing contests, and timer contests to solve abacus problems.
